Five Years at Ashland Home Center

Joel and Jenny Jessee of Ashland Home Center—Appliance and Mattress will soon be celebrating five years in business at their store located at 1401 Siskiyou (above Papa Murphy's). Joel is passionate about his focus on customer service while providing chain store pricing to the local Ashland market.

"We have the same product and price as any competitors, along with state-of-the-art financing programs," Joel said. "The advantage to buying local is consistent with Ashland's determination to develop and sustain an exceptional quality of life. Every dollar spent at a small local business circulates into the community four times more than sending the money out of town via a Big Box store. You don't need to leave town to find a great deal."

Family Health Care with Dr. Miriam Soriano

When Miriam Soriano, M.D., of Ashland Family Health Care (420 Williamson Way) first moved to Ashland in 1989, she had just finished medical school at Stanford and did her family practice residency in Salinas, California, at the Natividad Medical Center.
"My family and I came to visit the Rogue Valley and fell in love with Ashland, so I began to explore jobs here," Dr. Soriano said. "When we moved here in '89, I worked at La Clinica del Valle, which at that time was a small, migrant seasonal farmworker clinic. After working there for three years, I decided to go out on my own and start a family practice office. I like the small, personal atmosphere and the amount of time I can devote to my patients."

Celebrating One Year at Piccadilly Cycles

Piccadilly Cycles (525 A Street) recently celebrated its one-year anniversary, and owners Blaine Pickett and Gus Janeway have stayed true to their mission: "To help people of any age and any fitness level make riding a bike part of their everyday life."
"Gus and I met when our kids were in kindergarten together at Helman," Blaine said. "We discovered we had a mutual love of bicycling, and in the fall of 2013 developed the plan for a bike shop focused on electric-assist and traditional bikes."

Garrison’s Mattress Gallery
Moves to Ashland

When Brian Garrison got a call from his dad in 2005 to move up to southern Oregon and help with his furniture store, he was a little reluctant.
"I was working as a controller of a construction company in southern California and really enjoyed learning the financial side of the business and doing quite well professionally," Brian said. "I was in my mid 20s and living the dream in beautiful San Diego. I thought it was a crazy idea, which is exactly the reaction my dad knew I would have. But he's a smart guy, and all he wanted to do was plant a seed. A year later I called him and made a deal."

The Long Musical Career of Pat O’Scannell

It was 35 years ago that a young Pat O’Scannell arrived in Ashland to work for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival as an instrumentalist specializing in early woodwinds and reeds, also doubling as a vocalist and on viola da gamba. Today, she continues her career as a freelance musician and teacher.
“I specialize in coaching and teaching early and traditional styles, as well as performing and creating programs in those styles,” Pat said. “The main instruments that I teach, in addition to the voice, are recorders and other fipple flutes, early double reeds, and viola da gamba. I am fluent in traditional Irish music as well, and teach the tin whistle and skills related to singing and the performance of Celtic music.”
