Prestigious Retinal Eye Center & Macular Research Institute in Ashland

When Dr. William S. Rodden opened the Retina & Vitreous Center of Southern Oregon in Ashland (246 Catalina Drive) in 1992, it was the first retinal practice in the entire region. "Prior to that, patients traveled to Portland or San Francisco to see a retina specialist," Dr. Rodden said.
Dr. Rodden developed the vitreoretinal service for the operating theater at Ashland Community Hospital, which, to this day, is the only surgery center used by the retina surgeons in southern Oregon. In 2002 he opened a fully functioning satellite office in Grants Pass (1019 NE 7th) to alleviate the travel burden on patients living further to the north.

Food and Fun at Mystic Treats

When Michael and Erika Lowe, owners of Mystic Treats Pizza & Pastries at 2345 Ashland Street (in the Tolman Creek Shopping Center) were younger, they both held several positions in the food industry, from dishwashing and pizzeria management to pastry chef. That experience led them to pontificate on what they would do differently, what practices they disagreed with, and what they thought the market was missing.
Fifteen years later, after working as technology consultants, they finally made the leap and opened their own restaurant, Mystic Treats in Talent, in the fall of 2010. They quickly outgrew the space, and when they heard the Old Farmhouse restaurant location was available, they jumped on it. The restaurant opened in Ashland in July 2013.

Salame Opens on the Plaza

One of the newest restaurants to open in Ashland is Salame, located at 47 N. Main, which opened its doors last May. Owner Anna Hogan has been involved in cooking and restaurants her whole life, starting at the age of three.
"Yes, age three, and I have pictures to prove it," Anna said. "I'm in the kitchen with my mom stirring the béarnaise, or at my grandmother's house setting up for a dinner party. I fell in love with cooking and service in New York, and put myself through college at Chico State waiting tables."

Star Sushi Celebrates Its First Anniversary in Ashland

Star Sushi, located at 293 E. Main in downtown Ashland (across from Bloomsbury Books), is celebrating one year in business. Owner Mario Camcho made the move in August 2012 after his family’s restaurant in Medford had enjoyed considerable success over the last seven years.
“I started work-ing with my father’s restaurant in Bea-verton when I was twenty years old,” Mario said. “In 2006 we decided to move to Medford and open a Star Sushi there. It was very popular, and we thought a similar restaurant in Ashland would be equally successful.”
The atmosphere at Star Sushi is comfortable and relaxing, with interesting murals on the wall, fun sculptures, and a number of tables along the walls and in front facing East Main. The sushi bar is located in back, and it seats eight people. There you will meet their all-star chef Ricky, who hails originally from Korea and knows everything there is to know about sushi and all its different permutations.

Healthy Home Solutions at Ricco Patterson Electric

While Congress dithers over the immigration act, the success of Ricco Patterson Electric in Ashland is a classic American Dream immigration story.
Co-owner Ricco Patterson was born in a small village outside Bogota, Colombia, and after being orphaned, was fortunate to be adopted to the U.S., becoming a U.S. citizen at the age of seven. He grew up in Olympia, Washington, and on the Rogue River in Galice, where his adoptive family owned and operated a river expedition company.
