32 Years and Counting for Macaroni’s/Martino’s
It was 32 years ago when Beasy McMillan and his long-time employee at Beasy’s Back Room, Marty Morlan, teamed up to open Macaroni’s Ristorante at 58 E. Main, right up from the Plaza. It wasn’t long before Marty became sole owner, and in 1995, when an opportunity came to build and lease an upstairs space, he opened Martino’s, a restaurant/bar with a back patio that opened out onto “the bricks” of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and a balcony overlooking Main Street. It soon became one of the more popular places in town, with the same menu serving both restaurants.
“Working for Beasy and then partnering with him was the best thing that ever happened to me,” said Marty, who grew up in Tigard and came to Ashland in 1978 to finish his college career at SOU. “I also want to give a shout-out to Amy Wong and Kristie Monroe, who have been an integral part of the Macaroni’s and Martino’s family, enhancing the Ashland restaurant community.”
Marty and his staff take pride in their calzones, amazing hearth-style pizzas, pastas and salads.
“We serve only the freshest ingredients and provide an eclectic wine selection for the perfect pairing,” Marty said. “Outdoor seating is available just steps from the Festival and overlooking downtown Ashland. Contact us for private parties and catering events. I would like to invite everyone to come experience our fine Italian restaurant for a great meal before a show, a drink afterward, or family dining. We support local as much as possible. For example, our bread is made daily at La Baguette Bakery in Ashland.”
The menu is varied, and one of the more popular items is the Fettuccine Carbonara, featuring Applewood smoked bacon, caramelized onions, sweet peas, and parmesan in an egg yolk cream sauce. Or you can try the Crispy Parmesan Breaded Chicken Breast and/or Eggplant Medallions topped with marinara and melted mozzarella, with a side of fettuccine alfredo.
“We also offer house-made lasagna,” Marty said. “And many people don’t know this, but I personally prepare our famous lemon ricotta cheesecake, which is lemon-infused ricotta and cream cheese in a graham cracker almond crust, topped with Oregon mixed berry coulis.”
Macaroni’s is open 4:30pm to 9pm, and Martino’s 4:30pm to closing, although the dinner menu ends at 10pm, at which time the bistro menu begins. They’re also available for pickup/delivery.
