Fast and Affordable Internet through AFN

November 2019

Countryside Village RetirementThere aren’t many communities in the U.S. that can boast having their own telecommunications service completely separate from the profit-seeking private companies. Officially, Ashland is one of only 178 communities across the nation that provide residents with a locally-owned, lightning-fast fiber optic infrastructure.

Ashland Fiber Network (AFN) was created in the late 1990s when a small group of local innovators decided to take control of the city’s destiny by building its own telecommunications network. It was a ground-breaking decision at the time, and here it is twenty years later, and AFN is thriving.

“The community-owned infrastructure is designed to provide a platform for showcasing local people, supporting local innovators, and sharing our community’s unique independent way of living and thinking with the world,” said Adam Hanks, Assistant City Administrator. “AFN’s unique open access model means that the City owns, manages and maintains the telecommunications infrastructure, then leases it to preferred locally owned Internet Service Providers (ISP’s) so customers can choose between going with AFN directly or the partner ISP that best fits their needs. Our ISP partners are Ashland Home Net (now also serving Jeffnet customers), Infostructure, and Computer Country.”

Hanks also pointed out another advantage AFN provides for both customers and the City. “Unlike most Multiple System Operators (Charter, Century Link, etc.) 100% of the revenue generated from subscriptions stays in the community,” he said. “By doing so, we’re guaranteeing that the businesses, residents, educators, medical facilities, emergency services, and other who help make our community great have access to the most advanced telecommunications technology available anywhere.”

After 20 years, AFN is still expanding capabilities and reinvesting every dollar of revenue into creating an even better experience for its customers and the community.

“It’s easy to connect to the best internet available and help support your community,” Hanks said. “If you’re only looking for an internet connection, you can sign up through AFN. If you’re looking for a package that includes services such as telephone, TV, and email, you can sign up through one of the four companies we partner with.”

Local businesses have definitely profited through their AFN connections.
“Today, AFN provides Ashland businesses with internet services that equal or surpass those available in major metropolitan areas,” Hanks said. “We are committed to providing business owners with access to the tools they need in order to thrive in an increasingly connected world.”

A testimonial from Mike of Ashland: “I’ve been connected to AFN Internet for over a decade, enjoying super fast speeds, a reliable connection, friendly local customer service assistance, and super affordable rates. My bill is $15 a month less than a friend who lives in Portland.”
