FUNCTIONAL LANDSCAPING WITH BEARCLAW SERVICES

October 2023

Bearclaw ServicesBearclaw Landscape Services is celebrating 28 years in the valley, although owner Juan Meraz got his start in the landscape business in 1988, working for Rainbow Landscape Company. He jokes that in those early years, he did landscaping for newly built homes, and the ground was so hard and compacted from the construction crews that he had to use a bear claw to break up the soil. When he decided to start his own company, the first thing that came to mind was “Bearclaw,” and the rest is history.

“I love the creative and functional aspects of working with clients to achieve their goals and dreams,” said Juan, who grew up in the Rogue Valley. “I use my extensive knowledge of the area’s climate, topography and native plants to create functional landscapes suited to our four seasons, the variety of soils, and the micro-climate here in the valley.”

In 2008, Jane Hard-grove, who had been a contractor herself, joined the crew as a designer and consultant. Juan and Jane have been working together in one form or another for almost 30 years. They found that they enjoyed a well-balanced and effective working relationship, combining her artistic designs and vision with Juan’s skill in bringing that vision to life.

“We both love to create beautiful and functional spaces outside,” Jane said. “When a client calls, we meet on-site and listen to their needs and desires. If a design is needed, then a price is set and we move forward with a drafted plan. The plan helps the client visualize the possibilities of the project.”
Those possibilities are guided by Juan’s extensive knowledge of what will bring the best, most rewarding results.

“We go over the plan and made any changes needed,” Juan said. “We then bid all or part of that plan, set a start date and the fun begins.”

Bearclaw Landscape Services is a full-service landscape company offering stonework, pavers, and flagstone in addition to irrigation system installation, lawns, lawn alternatives, landscape design, fencing, arbors, walkways, patios, retaining walls, advice on drought-tolerant and/or deer-resistant plants, and bird/butterfly pollinator gardens. Creating fire barriers is a big part of their design efforts.
“We focus on one job a time and have a small, experienced crew,” Juan said. “We love the creative process with our clients.”

Jane agreed. “Each job is based on what the client is looking for and what makes sense for them,” she said. “The experience of creating a functional and satisfying solution for clients begins with listening.”
