Great Food and Catering at Goodness Gracious

September 2018

Goodness Gracious Cafe and CateringYou can’t get more local than Carrie and Phil Stobbe, owners of Goodness Gracious Café and Catering. Carrie is 4th generation Josephine County, as her great grandmother Cecilia Fifeld was valedictorian at Kirby High School before 1900. Her grandparents Helen and Dewey Probst started Probst Flower Shop in 1942, and her dad, Bob Hamilton, owned Ham’s Body Shop.

Carrie and Phil married in 1979, and they moved to Michigan, where Phil finished college. Soon it was back to the Rogue Valley, and Phil now teaches at Rogue River Junior/Senior High School.

“We worked in group homes for teenage boys for six years while Phil was finishing his teaching degree,” Carrie said. “I cooked for a lot of people and started catering weddings for friends. We’ve worked hard for 25 years to build the catering business, and today we cater all over the Rogue Valley.”

In 2012 the Stobbes decided to expand by opening a restaurant, Goodness Gracious Café, at 221 SW G Street. “We have a unique patio space for a downtown setting,” Carrie said. “Our son Reid designed, planned and built it for us five years ago. My mom Joan Hamilton has a green thumb and she designed the garden. Those flowers are a labor of love!”

There is also indoor seating (air conditioned in summer; heated in winter) and a few sidewalk tables. The menu at Goodness Gracious is completely made from scratch—soups, salads, sandwiches and yummy desserts.

“We call ourselves bistro style—simple, familiar, affordable and delicious,” Carrie said. “Our breakfasts include daily roasted red potatoes, fresh cheddar cheese biscuits and house-made gravy. Our Huevos Rancheros are extremely popular.”

The menu is completely GMO-free with gluten free and vegan options. And they aim to be organic whenever possible.
“We have a great team of hard-working, friendly employees, and we are grateful every day that they come to work,” Carrie said. “We try to be true to our southern Oregon roots and values. Leslie Smith is our baker extraordinaire, and she provides cookies, gluten-free options and fresh-baked desserts.”

Catering is still a big part of the Stobbes’ business. “We do weddings, corporate events, parties, fundraisers, banquets, etc.,” Carrie said. “You can find us at or like us on Facebook.”
