Full Spectrum Primary Care at WellSpring Family Practice

May 2018

WellSpring Family PracticeWhen Dr. Jon E.L. Ermshar, M.D., finished his Residency at Loma Linda School of Medicine in 1991, he already had a job lined up at the old Southern Oregon Medical Center in Grants Pass. By the time he got here, Dr. Jim Sloan and his son were killed in a tragic airplane accident, and he made the decision to buy Dr. Sloan’s practice from his wife.

“Grants Pass in 1991 was an ideal place to start a Primary Care practice,” Dr. Ermshar said. “I wanted to be a ‘full spectrum family physician, and the position here offered that opportunity. I have been able to continue an active practice that includes obstetrics and pediatrics, as well as full hospital privileges.”
Jon is the eighth physician in the Ermshar family, and his maternal grandfather was the family physician in Fallbrook, California (north of San Diego), for many years.

“I’ve been privileged to fulfill my dream job now for 27 years,” Dr. Ermshar said. “I started and incorporated WellSpring Family Practice in 2000. We moved to 1716 Williams Highway later that year to be in close proximity to the new hospital to better serve patients in critical conditions. In 2017 we moved into a brand new building at the same address to accommodate our still growing practice.”

The practice really grew in 2012 when Dr. Ermshar agreed to assume management of Dr. Derrick Sorweide’s practice after he retired to become an instructor at the DO school in Lebanon, Oregon.

“We hired two new mid-level providers to expand the overall practice to five providers,” Dr. Ermshar said. “We have operated both practice sites for the past five years, with WellSpring North located at the Hawthorne Medical Building.”

In June 2018, primary care physician Dr. Leona O’Keefe, MD, will also join the staff. She is a graduate of Ventura Family Practice Residency program, and most recently practiced in Long Beach, California. She is already scheduling appointments.

The four other providers working at the practice include Gail Giltner, FNP; Erin Winn, PA-C; Brett Rasmussen, PA-C; and Kelsie Brangoccio, PA-C.

WSFP offers aggressive “full spectrum primary care” for the entire community, and they continue to deliver babies and take care of pediatric patients in and out of hospital, as well as all manner of adult medicine.

“At Wellspring Family Practice, we focus on listening to patients, applying modern knowledge of medicine to make a timely and accurate diagnosis, and finding the most effective treatment for each patient,” Dr. Ermshar said. “At each visit, we try to be as complete and comprehensive as possible, making sure the patients understand the diagnosis and treatment options and how this will affect them.”

Dr. Ermshar and his wife Anna have raised three children, now embarking on their own careers. “We feel we are part of Grants Pass and have helped this community be the Great American City it is,” Dr. Ermshar said. “WellSpring Family Practice is grateful for the patronage of Grants Pass and look forward to many years of service ahead.”
