Ashland Artisan Emporium: One-Stop Shopping for Local, Artful Gifts

The holidays are upon us, which puts many of us in a frenzy to find the perfect gift for everyone on our list. But there’s no need to panic, suffer inclement weather, mall music or crowds: there’s a place right here in Ashland where you can score unique, artful, locally-produced gifts, all under one roof and just a few minutes from home.

The Ashland Artisan Emporium, in the Ashland Shopping Center, is a collective marketplace that features top-quality items by local artisans, crafters, collectors and re-sellers. Housed in a space of more than 17,000 square feet, the Emporium is a sure bet for shopping in comfort and finding just the right thing.

“This store has become such a mecca of creativity, and a trusted place for conscientious local shoppers to find unique gifts and upcycled and recycled items,” says Emporium owner Michelle Christian. “Everything is fabulous; our inventory ranges from rocks and gems, to soaps, candles, lotions, books, jewelry, clothing, shoes, home décor, a large consignment furniture section, toys, lamps … the list goes on and on.”

The Emporium is open 7 days a week, and the inventory changes daily, says Michelle. “Our mission is to provide a warm, caring, socially responsible environment to shop in.”

The vision for the Emporium belongs to Michelle’s father, who purchased the Ashland Shopping Center in 1989. In 2010 he asked Michelle, who had moved back to Ashland with her own family, to help open and manage a crafters mall.

Although her father died just three months after the shop opened, Michelle made sure his vision continued. Nearly eight years later, the Emporium is thriving.

“Recently we’ve seen a new wave of incoming vendors,” Michelle said. “They have really freshened things up and breathed new life into the Emporium.”

Michelle credits the shop’s success to the many talented creative folks in Ashland. “This town is full of creative people who can showcase and sell items in the Emporium, something they might never have been able to do in a traditional brick-and-mortar setting,” she says.

She also gives kudos to her dedicated staff. “My staff has really helped get us to where we are today,” she said. “We love helping people succeed, and matching the correct item with the right person.”
